THE CITY
The civil architecture of Seville is of great beauty and variety. Our city has played an important role in history. Passed through it different peoples and cultures and many chose as the capital of the kingdom. Following the discovery of America its port became the largest in Europe and the numerous treasures came from the New Continent.
Due to its important role throughout history, buildings were constructed as relevant as the Torre del Oro, Alcazar, Town Hall, Archive of the Indies, Palacio de San Telmo, Tobacco Factory...
Seville is a city that boasts a large number of churches, each of which is beautiful outside but save the real reassure for inside where you will find that the walls true works of art.
The majority of these temples are immensely preserved, although transformed by different restorations in different times, still preserving the religious function for which they were created. Many churches were built between the 16th and 18th centuries; they were fundamentally Renaissance and Baroque. In the 17th century Seville could not save itself from the serious economic crisis that, at tee time, all of Europe in general was affected by, particularly Spain. Seville was a city especially rich in hospitals and foundations that were dedicated to charity and needy persons. Seville is a city that, apart from posessing a large number of chapels and hermitages, is older than any other Spanish city. We specially mention two basilicas that we have in the city: Macarena Basilica and Gran Poder Basilica, the two “Hermandades” for which the people of Seville have a great devotion.
